How to Know If Your Facility is a Bird Magnet
Birds don’t choose your facility at random. If they’re roosting on your roofline or circling your rafters, there’s a reason. Certain locations, layouts, and operational
You’ll often find birds in food processing facilities because birds are opportunistic by nature. They look for warm places to nest near plentiful food sources. Food distribution, manufacturing and packaging facilities provide the perfect avian habitat – it’s warm and dry, with plenty of places to build a nest. Most often you’ll find birds in food processing facilities because they offer hidden locations not easily detected by humans. Then one day you might notice their droppings show up on the floor or worse yet, on the food product itself – and you have a real problem on your hands.
This is a serious health hazard as bird droppings contain many pathogens which can cause serious and sometimes fatal illnesses. In addition, bird droppings are corrosive to many metals and damage or destroy equipment driving up downtime and maintenance expenses.
Under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), if an FDA inspector spots nesting birds in food processing facilities, they can mandate a recall, detain food product and/or suspend operations of the facility until the infestation is addressed. If these findings are made public, the food processor’s brand and reputation can suffer irreparable harm causing significant loss of market share.
Customers will certainly shy away from products produced in a facility known to have birds and their droppings in and around food products. And of course, no one wants to go back to a restaurant where they were sickened by tainted food.
As you can imagine, the true cost of unwanted birds in your facility is difficult to measure.
